High-profile illustrator Noma Bar designed the cover of our June 2021 edition. Known for his talent in blending two concepts together using negative space, his design shows a bird of prey and a figure looking in all directions, showing the need for collective and individual vigilance and awareness of financial crime – the topic of our special report on pages 16 to 23.
Financial crime costs the world nearly US$3.5tn and the UK nearly £7bn per year (p.17). In our special report, City of London Police (CoLP) Assistant Commissioner Angela McLaren, national lead for Economic Crime and Cybercrime, tells us that “fraud and cybercrime are the most prevalent crimes encountered in the UK”, and that she welcomes a “multi-agency approach”, such as our partnership with CoLP, to help tackle the problem.
This includes identifying tell-tale signs of fraud – a topic that fraud investigatory expert Andrew Durant “could write a book about”. Read more on pages 48 to 49.
It also includes action on money laundering, which has continued despite the pandemic. Richard Parlour, principal of Financial Markets Law International, outlines ‘How to turn the tide’ (p.44).
Speaking of change, Tony Danker, the new director-general of the Confederation of British Industry CBI), identifies a “once-in-a-generation ‘reset moment’ with the lessons of Brexit, Covid-19, net zero, and new technologies” in our profile interview on pages 24 to 27, where he shares his vision for business and the CBI’s ten-year economic plan.
